Ashta Vinayaka



Ashta Vinayaka:

Sri Mayureshwara or Moreshwara of Morgaon The Ashta Vinayaka (literally eight Vinayakas) are eight Swayambhu (self-manifested, not man-made) images of Sri Vinayaka. They are worshipped in eight temples, all located in Maharashtra. Each of the Vinayaka has a puranic event associated with it from Ganesh Purana and Mudgala Purana. Sri Mayureshwara or Moreshwara of Morgaon:

Sri Mayureshwara or Moreshwara of Morgaon Sri Mayureshwara or Moreshwara temple of Morgaon Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha killed demon Sindhu riding on a Mayura (Peacock). On the request of the devas, Sri Ganesha permanently stayed there as Sri Mayureshwara or Sri Moreshwara.

Pilgrimage:
The Mayureshwara or Sri Moreshwara temple is located in Morgaon in the Pune district of Maharashtra. The temple is situated on the bank of river Kartha. This temple is the starting and ending point of Ashtavinayaka temple pilgrimage.

Sri Siddhi Vinayaka of Siddhatek:

Sri Siddhi Vinayaka of Siddhatek Sri Siddhi Vinayaka temple of Siddhatek Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha blessed Lord Vishnu to be successful in the battle against demons Madhu and Kaitabha; when Lord Vishnu worshipped Sri Ganesha before slaying the demons. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed there (where Lord Vishnu worshipped Him) as Siddhi Vinayaka.

Pilgrimage:
The Siddhi Vinayaka temple is located in Siddhatek in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The temple is situated on the bank of river Bhima.

Sri Ballala Vinayaka or Ballaleshwar of Pali:

Sri Ballala Vinayaka or Ballaleshwar of Pali Sri Ballala Vinayaka or Ballaleshwar temple of Pali Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha saved His boy-devotee Ballala when he was severely beaten by his father and tied to a tree, for being engrossed in worshipping Lord Ganesha along with his friends. On the request of Ballala, Sri Ganesha permanently stayed there as Sri Ballala Vinayaka or Ballaleshwar.

The Ballala Vinayaka temple is located in Pali in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The river Amba flows nearby.

Sri Varad Vinayaka of Mahad:

Sri Varad Vinayaka of Mahad Sri Varad Vinayaka temple of Mahad Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha blessed sage Grutsamad (who is said to be the founder of Ganapatya cult), when the sage meditated on Him and underwent a long penance. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed in that place (where Grutsamad performed penance) as Sri Varad Vinayaka.

Sri Chintamani Vinayaka of Theur or Thevur:

Sri Chintamani Vinayaka of Theur or Thevur Sri Chintamani Vinayaka temple of Theur or Thevur Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha killed Gana in a battle and gave back the Chintamani jewel to sage Kapila, when the sage meditated on Him to get back the jewel. The Chintamani jewel was taken away by Gana from sage Kapila by force. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed in that place (where the battle took place) as Sri Chintamani Vinayaka.

Pilgrimage:
The Chintamani Vinayaka temple is located in Theur or Thevur in the Pune district of Maharashtra. The temple is situated on the confluence of rivers Mula, Matha and Bhima.

Sri Girijatmaja of Lenyadri:

Sri Girijatmaja of Lenyadri Sri Girijatmaja temple of Lenyadri Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha granted the boon to Devi Parvati to be born as her son, when Devi Parvati worshipped Him to get Him as her son. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed in that place (of His birth as son of Devi Parvati) as Girijatmaja.

Pilgrimage:
The Girijatmaja temple is located in Lenyadri in the Pune district of Maharashtra. Lenyadri is a series of rock-cut caves near Junnar in Pune district. Cave 7 is the temple of Vinayaka.

Sri Vigneshwara of Ozar or Ojhar Sri Vigneshwara temple of Ozar or Ojhar Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha defeated demon Vignashura and checked his atrocities. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed in that place (of battle) as Sri Vighneshwara.

Sri Mahaganapati of Ranjangaon:

Sri Mahaganapati of Ranjangaon Sri Mahaganapati temple of Ranjangaon Puranic Event:
Sri Ganesha blessed Lord Shiva to be successful in the battle against demon Tripura, when Lord Shiva meditated on Him before waging war against demon Tripura. Sri Ganesha permanently stayed in that place (where Lord Shiva meditated) as Sri Mahaganapati.
