Natarajar - Chidambaram:

Sri Natarajar Chidambaram Natarajar Temple
  • Natarajar (Chidambaram): One of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas as well as Paadal Petra Sthalas of Shiva. Here Shiva is known as Ambalavaanar or Natarajar and Ambal is called Sivakami Amman.

    - Pancha Bhoota Sthalam - Akasha or Space element: This Pancha Bhoota Sthalam represents the Akasha or Space element.

    - Paadal Petra Sthalam: This is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Lord Shiva.

    - Tandava dance of Lord Shiva at Darukavana: According to legend, once Lord Shiva went to Darukavana in the form of a mendicant to remove the pride of learning of the rishis there. Shiva was having a begging bowl in his hand and He was accompanied by Mohini (Lord Vishnu in disguise). The wives of the rishis were greatly attracted by this beautiful pair. The rishis became angry because of this and tried to destroy them through supernatural powers. They sent a tiger. Shiva killed it and wrapped the tiger skin on His waist. Then they sent a poisonous serpent. Shiva tied it around His neck. Thereafter they sent Apasmara Muyalaka. Shiva crushed him under His feet. The rishis became humble and confessed defeat. Shiva was pleased and started to dance the great Tandava dance before the gods and the rishis.

    - Tandava dance of Lord Shiva at Thillai Vana (Chidambaram): Lord Adisesha hearing the description of the great Tandava dance of Shiva yearned to see it himself. He performed penance and had the darshan of Shiva. Lord Shiva directed him to go to the Thillai Vana. Adisesha incarnated as Patanjali and went to the forest of Thillai. Rishi Vyaghrapada joined him there. Both of them started worshipping Shiva in the form of Swayambhu Linga. (The hermitage of Patanjali is at Ananteeswaram and Vyaghrapada at Tirupapuleeswaram in Chidambaram). When the time was ripe, Lord Shiva appeared there in the form of Nataraja and performed the Ananda Tandava in the presence of Sivakamasundari, the gods and the rishis including Patanjali and Vyaghrapada.

    - Chit Sabha: The Chit Sabha, the innermost portion of the temple is the place where Lord Shiva is said to have performed His Ananda Tandava.

  • Shivalokathyagar (Tirunallur Perumanam or Achalapuram): One of the Paadal Petra Sthalas of Shiva. Here Shiva is known as Shivalokathyagar and Ambal is called Tiruvenneerammai or Uma Devi.

    - Worship of Lord Shiva by various sages: Sages Parasara, Vashishta, Bhrigu and Jamdagni are said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here and were blessed with the vision of Shivalokam (hence the name Shivalokathyagar).

    - Worship of Lord Shiva by Devi Aditi: Devi Aditi is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here.

    - Indra Deva's futile attempt to take the Shiva Lingam: Indra deva also came here in his Airavata elephant and worshipped the Shiva Lingam. Then he tried to take the Lingam to heaven for his mother but failed to remove it. During his attempt, Devi Parvati made a sound which was sweeter than a nightingale. Hence she is known as Kuyilinum Nanmozhi Amman.

    - Worship of Lord Shiva by devas: Indra deva, Airavata, Budha, Surya and Chandra are said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here.

    - Lord Shiva assumed the fierce form of Aghora to kill demon Maruttuvan: According to another legend, Lord Shiva assumed the fierce form of Aghora Murthy and killed demon Maruttuvan here who was tormenting the saints and innocent people.

    - Lord Shiva saved sage Swetakatu from the clutches of death: Also, sage Swetakatu is said to have been saved from the clutches of death by Lord Shiva here.

    - Meikanda Deva born by the grace of Swetharanyeswarar: Meikanda Deva, the author of Shivagnana Botham is said to have been born by the grace of Swetharanyeswarar.

    - Marriage of Shiva-Parvati: According to legend, Devi Parvati once expressed a desire to have an earthly wedding with Lord Shiva. The desire was fulfilled in an indirect way. A dispute arose between Shiva and Parvati in Kailasha over a game, whereby Lord Shiva cursed Devi Parvati to be born as a cow on the earth. Lord Shiva then told Sri Vishnu to bathe the cow in river Kaveri so that the Devi gets back Her form. When the Devi got back Her form, She lived as the daughter of Bharata Muni. In due course, Bharata Muni approached Lord Shiva for the marriage with Devi Parvati. The divine marriage of Shiva-Parvati took place in this place. This place is visited by many people who pray to Shiva-Parvati before their marriage.

    Veeratteswarar - Tirukkurukkai:

    Lord Shiva
  • Veeratteswarar (Tirukkurukkai): One of the Ashtha Veeratta Sthala as well as Paadal Petra Sthalas of Shiva. Here Shiva is known as Veeratteswarar and Ambal is called Gnanambika.

    - Ashtha Veeratta Sthalam: This is one of the 8 Ashtha Veeratta Sthalam of Lord Shiva.

    - Paadal Petra Sthalam: This is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Lord Shiva.

    - Lord Shiva burnt Manmatha: Lord Shiva is said to have burnt Manmatha (Kamadeva) in this place with the fire from His third eye. There is a pit in this temple (Vibhooti Kuttai) which is identified with the place where Manmatha was burnt to ashes by Lord Shiva. White ash is found in this pit with the distinct odour of vibhuti (sacred ash).

    - Legend of Deergavahu muni: According to another legend, a muni by name Deergavahu used to visit Shaivite shrines and invoke river Ganga through his yogic powers to offer her water to Lord Shiva. His arms got shrunk in this sthalam when he invoked the river here, hence the name Tirukkurukkai.

  • Kutram Poruttha Nathar (Karuppariyalur): One of the Paadal Petra Sthalas of Shiva. Here Shiva is known as Kutram Poruttha Nathar or Aparadha Kshameswarar and Ambal is called Kolvalai Nayaki and Vichitra Balambika.

    - Paadal Petra Sthalam: This is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Lord Shiva.

    - Three shrines: This temple has three shrines of Lord Shiva (like Sirkazhi) - Kutram Poruttha Nathar, Uma Maheshwarar and Sattanathar. Hence this sthalam is also known as Madakkovil and is referred to as Melaikkazhi

    - Lord Shiva forgave Indra deva: According to a legend, once Indra deva attacked Lord Shiva with his vajra but the Lord forgave him for his hasty act. Hence Shiva is known as Aparadha Kshameswarar in Sanskrit and Kutram Poruttha Nathar in Tamil.

    - Worship of Lord Shiva by sage Vashishta and Hanuman: Sage Vashishta and Hanuman are said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here.

    - Temple built by Hanuman: According to legend, Hanuman once tried to uproot the Shiva Lingam installed by Sri Rama at Rameswaram, so that the Shiva Lingam brought by him can be installed. Hanuman atoned this sin by worshipping Lord Shiva at Tirukaruppariyalur. Lord Shiva blessed him there. Thereafter Hanuman built this temple of Lord Shiva in this place.

    - Lord Shiva rescued the Pandavas from the poisoned pond: There are five shrines of Lord Shiva here. According to legend the Pancha Pandavas installed five Shiva Lingams after they escaped from the poisoned pond. Lord Shiva is said to have converted the poison water of the pond into nectar. The pond is known as Nachchuppoigai.
