(A) Vanquishing the demons in the battle:

1. Vanquishing Smara or Kamadeva:

9. Destroying Sacrifice of Daksha:

(B) Jyotirlinga Incarnations:

1. Somanatha Jyotirlinga:

Somanatha Jyotirlingaसौराष्ट्रे सोमनाथम् (Sauraassttre Somanaatham): In Saurashtra is the Somanatha Jyotirlinga.
• Chandradeva performed penance at Prabhasa Kshetra to get relieved of his disease of consumption due to the curse of Daksha. Lord Shiva appeared before him and relieved him of his curse.

Event: Somanatha Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 14)
Pilgrimage: Somnath temple (Gir Somnath district, Gujarat)


2. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga:

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlingaश्रीशैले मल्लिकार्जुनम् (Shriishaile Mallikaarjunam): In Shrishaila is the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga.
• Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati went to visit their son Kumara in the Krauncha Parvata and abided there as Jyoti.

Event: Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 15)

3. Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlinga:

Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlingaउज्जयिन्यां महाकालम् (Ujjayinyaam Mahaakaalam): In Ujjayini is the Mahakala Jyotirlinga.
• Devotee Veda Priya surrendered to Lord Shiva for protection against demon Dushana at Avanti. Lord Shiva appeared as Mahakaleshwara and vanquished demon Dushana with a humkara.

Event: Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 16)
Pilgrimage: Mahakaleshwar temple (Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh)


4. Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga:

Omkareshwara Jyotirlingaॐकारं अमलेश्वरम् (Omkaaram Amaleshvaram): In Omkara is the Amaleshwara Jyotirlinga.
• Vindhya Mountain performed penance at Omkareshwara to get the power to become higher. Lord Shiva appeared before him and granted the boon.

Event: Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 18)
Pilgrimage: Omkareshwar temple (Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh)


5. Kedarnatha Jyotirlinga:

Kedarnatha Jyotirlingaहिमालये केदारम् (Himaalaye Kedaaram): In Himalaya is the Kedara Jyotirlinga.
• Nara and Narayana, the incarnations of Hari, performed penance at Badaryashrama. Lord Shiva appeared before them and granted the boon to abide there for their worship.

Event: Kedarnatha Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 19)

6. Bhimashankara Jyotirlinga:

Bhimashankara Jyotirlingaडाकिन्यां भीमाशंकरम् (Ddaakinyaam Bhiimaashangkaram): In Dakini is the Bhimashankara Jyotirlinga.
• Devotee Sudakshina surrendered to Lord Shiva for protection against demon Bhima at Kamarupa. Lord Shiva appeared before him and vanquished demon Bhima with a humkara.

Event: Bhimashankara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 20 to 21)

7. Vishwanatha Jyotirlinga:

Vishwanatha Jyotirlingaवाराणस्यां विश्वेशम् (Vaaraannasyaam Vishvesham): In Varanasi is the Vishwesha Jyotirlinga.
• Lord Shiva established Kashi in the mortal world by placing it from his trident and subsequently abiding in Kashi as Vishwanatha.

Event: Vishwanatha Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 22)

8. Tryambakeshwara Jyotirlinga:

Tryambakeshwara Jyotirlingaत्र्यंबकं गौतमीतटे (Tryambakam Gautamii-Tatte): On the bank of river Gautami is the Tryambaka Jyotirlinga.
• Sage Gautama worshipped Lord Shiva at Brahmagiri mountain as an act of repentance for (a false accusation of) killing a cow. Lord Shiva appeared and relieved him from the false accusation. Lord Shiva also released river Ganga from his matted hairs which became famous in the world as Gautami Ganga (Godavari).

Event: Tryambakeshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 24 to 27)
Pilgrimage: Tryambakeshwar temple (Nashik district, Maharashtra)


9. Vaidyanatha Jyotirlinga:

Vaidyanatha Jyotirlingaपरल्यां वैद्यनाथम् (Paralyaam Vaidyanaatham): In Parli is the Vaidyanatha Jyotirlinga.
• Ravana performed penance worshipping Lord Shiva at Kailasha. Lord Shiva appeared and gave him an Atma Linga. The Atma Linga got stuck in the ground while Ravana was carrying it back to Lanka.

Event: Vaidyanatha Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 28)
Pilgrimage: Baidyanath Dham (Deogarh district, Jharkhand)
Pilgrimage: Parli Vaijnath temple (Beed district, Maharashtra)

10. Nageshwara Jyotirlinga:

Nageshwara Jyotirlingaनागेशं दारुकावने (Naagesham Daarukaavane): In Darukavana is the Nagesha Jyotirlinga.
• Devotee Supriya surrendered to Lord Shiva for protection against demon Daruka at Darukavana. Lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him the Pashupata Astra. Supriya vanquished the demons with it.

Event: Nageshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 29 to 30)
Pilgrimage: Nageshwar temple (Devbhoomi Dwaraka district, Gujarat)
Pilgrimage: Aundha Nagnath temple (Hingoli district, Maharashtra)
Pilgrimage: Jageshwar Dham (Almora district, Uttarakhand)


11. Rameshwara Jyotirlinga:

Rameshwara Jyotirlingaसेतुबंधे रामेशम् (Setubandhe Raamesham): In Setubandha is the Ramesha Jyotirlinga.
• Sri Rama worshipped Lord Shiva on the shore of the Southern Sea for victory against Ravana. Lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him the blessings of victory.

Event: Rameshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 31)
Pilgrimage: Rameshwaram temple (Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu)


12. Grishneshwara Jyotirlinga:

Grishneshwara Jyotirlingaघुश्मेशं शिवालये (Ghushmesham Shivaalaye): In Shivalaya is the Ghushmesha Jyotirlinga.
• Devotee Ghushma worshipped Lord Shiva by making one hundred and one Shiva Lingas as part of her daily worship at Shivalaya, even on the day she heard about the death of his son. Lord Shiva appeared before her and revived her son.

Event: Grishneshwara Jyotirlinga (Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita - 32 to 33)
Pilgrimage: Grishneshwar temple (Aurangabad district, Maharashtra)


(C) Other Incarnations:

1. Ardhanareeshwara Incarnation:

Ardhanareeshwara • Ardhanareeshwara Incarnation: Who showed the Ardhanareeshwara form to Lord Brahma and started the process of creation based on male and female principles.

Event: Ardhanareeshwara Incarnation (Shiva Purana - Shata Rudra Samhita - 3)


2. Grihapati Incarnation:

Lord Shiva • Grihapati Incarnation: Who incarnated as Grihapati in the house of sage Vaishvanara and Suchismati and performed penance at Kashi (Agnishwara Linga).

Event: Grihapati Incarnation (Shiva Purana - Shata Rudra Samhita - 13 to 15)
