• Ujjain → Lord Shiva protected devotee brahmin Veda Priya from the atrocities of demon Dushana and abides as Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlinga.
• Omkareshwar → Lord Shiva granted boon to Vindhya mountain and abides as Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga.
• Maheshwar → Lord Shiva abides as Ahilyeshwar Mahadev in Maheshwar.
• Chitrakoot → Sri Rama stayed in Chitrakoota during forest exile. Chitrakoot is spread across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
• Dandakaranya → Sri Rama visited the Sharabhanga and Suteekshna Ashrama in the Dandakaranya forest during forest exile. Part of Dandakaranya is in Madhya Pradesh.
• Orchha → Sri Rama is regarded as the King of Orchha. Queen Kunwar Ganesh (of Orchha king Madhukar Shah) brought the Image of Sri Rama from Ayodhya and established here.
• Amarkantak → River Narmada originates from Amarkantak. There is a temple of Devi Narmada there and Narmada Aarti is performed near the temple. There is also a temple of Devi Sonakshi near the origin of river Son-Bhadra. Narmada Parikrama is performed in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat which often starts from either Amarkantak or Omkareshwar.
• Valmiki (Chitrakoot) → Sage Valmiki had his hermitage in Chitrakoota where Sri Rama visited during his forest exile.
• Atri (Chitrakoot) → Sage Atri had his hermitage in Chitrakoota where Sri Rama visited during his forest exile.
• Sharabhanga (Dandakaranya) → Sage Sharabhanga had his hermitage in Dandakaranya where Sri Rama visited during his forest exile.
• Suteekshna (Dandakaranya) → Sage Suteekshna had his hermitage in Dandakaranya where Sri Rama visited during his forest exile.
• Sandipani (Ujjain) → Sage Sandipani had his hermitage and gurukula in Avanti where Sri Krishna studied with brother Balarama.
• Markandeya (Amarkantak) → Sage Markandeya is said to have performed penance worshipping Lord Shiva in Amarkantak. Amarkantak has a Markandeya Ashrama.
• Bhrigu (Amarkantak) → Sage Bhrigu is said to have meditated in Amarkantak. Bhrigukamandal of Amarkantak is identified with the place of meditation.
• Kapila (Amarkantak) → Sage Kapila is said to have meditated in Amarkantak. Kapildhara of Amarkantak is identified with the place of meditation.
• Jamadagni (Janapav) → Sage Jamadagni had his hermitage near the bank of river Narmada which is identified with Janapav.
• Govindapada (-) (Omkareshwar) → Sri Govindapada lived inside a cave on the bank of river Narmada in Omkareshwara. Sri Adi Shankaracharya met him there and took him as his guru.
• Adi Shankaracharya (788 - 820 CE?) (Omkareshwar) → Sri Adi Shankaracharya met his guru Sri Govindapada at Omkareshwara on the bank of river Narmada. There is a Shankaracharya Gufa near the Omkareshwar Temple which is identified with the place where Sri Govindapada lived. Sri Adi Shankaracharya had the famous philosophical debate with Mandana Mishra at Mahishmati. The place is identified with the Gupteshwar Mahadev Temple of Mandleshwar (8 km from Maheshwar).
• Kabirdas (1398 - 1518 CE?) (Amarkantak) → Sri Kabirdas is said to have meditated in Amarkantak. There is a Kabir Chabutra in Amarkantak which is identified with this place.
• Ahilyabai Holkar (1725 - 1795 CE) (Maheshwar) → Sri Ahilyabai Holkar was the queen of Indore who renovated many temples of Bharatavarsha. She establised Maheshwar as the seat of Holkar dynasty.
