Pancharama Kshetras
5 ancient Shiva Temples in Andhra Pradesh associated with the legend of Kartikeya and Tarakasura.
Puranic Event: When Kartikeya waged a war against Tarakasura, he could not vanquish the asura due to the protective power of a Shiva Lingam worn by him. Kartikeya was confounded to find the body pieces of Tarakasura getting united again and again after he broke them with his Vel Ayudha. Lord Vishnu appeared and told Kartikeya to break the Shiva Lingam worn by Tarakasura; then to prevent them from reuniting, install them in places where they fall by proper worship. Kartikeya broke the Shiva Lingam with his Agneya Astra and with the help of Surya deva fixed them in five places. The places of these five temples are known the Pancharama Kshetras.
