Sapta Vidanga Sthalams
7 Temples of Lord Shiva (in Tamil Nadu) where the image of Lord Thayaraja is installed.
(Note: PP stands for Paadal Petra Sthalam)
Puranic Event: Indra had a beautiful image of Lord Thyagaraja which he got from Lord Brahma. The valourous Chola king Muchukunda once helped Indra deva in the battle against the asuras. Indra deva wanted to give something in return. King Muchukunda was impressed by the image of Lord Thyagaraja and asked for it. Indra deva did not want to part with the image which he worshipped for a long time. So he ordered to prepare six similar images and placed the condition that if the king could identify the original image, it will be given to him. King Muchukunda prayed to Lord Shiva and was able to identify the original image. Indra deva then gave away all the seven images to king Muchukunda. The king installed the original image at Thiruvarur and others in six other temples along the bank of river Kaveri.
