Thiruputkuzhi Divya Desam - Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple


Sri RamaMeditation: I meditate on Sri Vijayaraghava Perumal and Sri Maragathavalli Thayar at Thiruputkuzhi Divya Desam.

Greatness: Thiruputkuzhi is a Divya Desam. It is the 57th Divya Desam and is located in Thondai Nadu. Yadavaprakasa, the guru of Sri Ramanuja resided in this place and taught the Advaita Vedanta to him here. There is a mandapam where Sri Ramanuja took the lessons from his guru.
- Perumal is in Sitting posture facing East.
- Pratyaksham: Jatayu
- Mangalasasanam: Thirumangai Alvar (2 Pasurams)
- Vimanam: Vijayakoti Vimanam (Virakoti Vimanam)
- Pushkarini: Jayatu Teertham

Puranic Events:

1. Sri Rama & Jatayu: Sri Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu in this place.
- Events: The episode of Jatayu is given in the Ramayana. Jatayu served Sri Rama by guarding Devi Sita when she was staying at Panchavati. Ravana came in the guise of a mendicant and abducted Devi Sita from Panchavati. When he was taking her to Lanka on the Pushpaka Vimana, Jatayu came to fight with Ravana. After giving a herioc resistance, Jatayu was wounded and fell down on the earth. When Sri Rama was searching for Devi Sita, he came to Jatayu. Jatayu told him about the whole episode and passed away. With grief and gratefulness, and like one's own relative, Sri Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu and gave him moksha. According to the legend of this temple, this incident took place here. It is said that with the end of his bow, Sri Rama created a tank and took bath in its holy water before performing the funeral rites.
- Note: There is an Image of Jatayu resting on the thigh of the Perumal in the garbhagriha. The Pushkarini name is associated with this event. It is known as Jatayu Pushkarini. There is also a hillock nearby with a small temple of Jatayu. Another Divya Desam associated with the same legend of Jatayu is Thirupullam Bhutangudi Divya Desam in Chola Nadu near Kumbakonam.

- River Vegavati: The temple lies between river Palar and river Vegavati.
- Jatayu Teertham: Pushkarini of the temple.

- Vijayaraghava Perumal: The Image of Sri Vijayaraghava Perumal in Sitting posture facing East. On his thigh is Jatayu. The Image is having four arms.
- Jatayu: The Image of Jatayu resting on the thigh of Perumal.
- Maragathavalli Thayar: The Image of Sri Maragathavalli Thayar.

Location: Thiruputkuzhi is located in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. This is in Thondai Nadu. The temple can be visited from Kanchipuram. The temple is around 7 km from Kanchipuram.
