Thiruvelukkai Divya Desam - Azhagiya Singa Perumal

Sri VishnuMeditation: I meditate on Sri Azhagiya Singar at Thiruvelukkai who protected the yagna of Lord Brahma from a Kapalika.

Thiruvelukkai Divya Kshetra: Thiruvelukkai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Periyalvar. Thiruvelukkai is situated near the Deepaprakasa Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. The name Thiruvelukkai is derived from Thiru (Divine), Vel (Wish) and Irrukai (Place of stay). So this means the divine place where the Lord stays out of his own wish. The Lord here is known as Azhagiya Singar which is the form of Sri Narasimha. In this form the Lord protected the yagna of Brahma from a Kapalika. The Lord is also known as Mukunda Nayakan which is said to be the earlier form of the Lord. In that form the Lord appeared before sage Bhrigu.

Lord appearing before sage Bhrigu: The original form of the Lord here known as Mukunda Nayakan, in which form he appeared before sage Bhrigu when he worshipped the Lord here.

Protecting the yagna of Brahma: Once there was a controversy between Lord Brahma and goddess Saraswati due to which the goddess started creating impediments when Lord Brahma started a yagna worshipping Lord Vishnu. Goddess Saraswati sent a Kapalika to destroy the yagna. Lord Vishnu then assumed the form of Narasimha (Azhagiya Singar) and vanquished the Kapalika.

Image: The image of the Lord here is in the form of Narasimha facing the west.

• Thiruvelukkai is located in Kanchipuram in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
