Sage Dadhichi
(Mahabharata - Vana Parva - Tirtha Yatra Parva - 100 to 101)

Kalkeyas under commandar Vritra defeating the Devas: In Treta Yuga, fearful danavas called Kalkeyas with Vritra as their commandar defeated the Devas. The Kalkeyas were invincible in battle.

Lord Brahma telling the Devas to go to sage Dadhichi: The Devas went to Lord Brahma with Indra at the head to find out the means to destroy Vritra. Lord Brahma told them that they should get the bones of sage Dadhichi and create a Vajra out of it. Vritra can be killed with that Vajra.

Sage Dadhichi giving his bones for the good of the Devas: The Devas went to sage Dadhichi with Narada at their head. The hermitage of Dadhichi was on the bank of river Saraswati. It resounded with the hum of bees and song of birds. Various animals like deers, chamaras and elephants moved about in that hermitage. The Devas saluted the sage and asked for the boon of his bones as directed by Lord Brahma. Sage Dadhichi was pleased and said that he will give up his body for the benefit of the Devas. Then the sage suddenly gave up his body. The Devas took his bones.

Indra slaying Vritra with his Vajra: The Devas waged a war against the Kalakeyas. However the Devas could not withstand the attack of the Kalakeyas and began to flee. Indra was confounded and asked protection from Lord Narayana. Lord Narayana gave a portion of his Tejas to Indra and increased his power. Other celestials and sages also imparted their power on Indra. Having gained power Indra faced Vritra who was sending fearful roars. Indra was filled with fear and he hurled his Vajra to kill the asura. The powerful Vajra struck Vritra and made him fall down and die. The celestials and the sages were filled with joy. The praised Indra. Seeing Vritra die, the Kalakeyas entered inside the fathomless ocean.
