Sri Rama humbling Sri Parashurama in Mithila

Mithila to Ayodhya: Sri Rama humbling Sri Parashurama:

(Valmiki Ramayana - Bala Kanda - 74 to 76)

Sri Rama humbling Parashuramaभार्गवदर्पविनाशक राम् (Bhargava-Darpa-Vinashaka Raam): Who destroyed the pride of Bhargava (Sri Parashurama).

Meditation: I meditate on Sri Rama humbling Sri Parashurama in Mithila after hearing the legend of the bows of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Sri Rama humbling Sri Parashurama: When the marriage procession of Sri Rama was returning to Ayodhya from Mithila, Parashurama confronted Sri Rama hearing that he has broken the bow of Lord Shiva. Parashurama brought the bow of Lord Vishnu (another powerful bow) and told Sri Rama to stretch it with the arrow. Then he will offer him a duel. Parashurama told the stories of the bows. Both the bows were crafted by Vishwakarma. One of them was given to Lord Shiva and another to Lord Vishnu. With the Shiva's bow, Lord Shiva had destroyed demon Tripura (and which Sri Rama had broken). Once the gods wanted to know from Lord Brahma, who among Shiva and Vishnu is more powerful. To ascertain this, Lord Brahma created enmity among them and made them fight with each other. There was a terrible fight. Lord Vishnu with a humkara, once made the bow of Lord Shiva stambhita (motionless). Then the gods appeased both the Lords and stopped their fight. Since the bow of Lord Shiva was rendered motionless, the gods started considering Lord Vishnu to be superior. Lord Shiva gave his bow to Devarata, a king in the lineage of king Janaka. Lord Vishnu gave his bow to sage Richika, the grandfather of Sri Parashurama (who got it through his father sage Jamadagni). On being challenged by Sri Parashurama, Sri Rama wielded the bow of Lord Vishnu with the arrow and said that he will either destroy the power of movement of Sri Parashurama or the results of his penance. Sri Parashurama was humbled. He chose his ascesis to be destroyed and knowing that Sri Rama was Lord Vishnu himself, deparated to Mandara mountain.
