Chitrakoota

Chitrakoota:

Sri Rama Meditation:

I meditate on Sri Rama staying in the ancient Chitrakoot mountain forest; the sacred mountain where the sages meditated for hundred years and ascended to the abode of Shiva.

(Valmiki Ramayana - Ayodhya Kanda 56, 94 - 119)

He told Lakshmana to build a parna shala (leaf hut) in that place. After the hut was constructed, Sri Rama performed the ceremony of purification while entering the hut by reciting sacred hymns. They settled down joyfully in that beautiful place.

Valmiki Ramayana - Ayodhya Kanda 94: Sri Rama describing the beauty of Chitrakoota to Devi Sita: While staying in Chitrakoota, Sri Rama one day described the beauty of Chitrakoota mountain to Devi Sita.

Valmiki Ramayana - Ayodhya Kanda 95: Sri Rama describing the beauty of river Mandakini to Devi Sita: While staying in Chitrakoota, Sri Rama one day described the beauty of river Mandakini to Devi Sita.

Valmiki Ramayana - Ayodhya Kanda 113: Sri Rama meeting Bharata at Chitrakoota: Bharata came to Chitrakoota to request Sri Rama to return to Ayodhya and accept the kingdom. Bharata informed Sri Rama about the death of their father. Sri Rama was highly grieved. He offered water and food balls to his departed father by standing in river Mandakini. Bharata then requested Sri Rama to return to Ayodhya and accept the kingdom, he being the eldest son of their dynasty. Sri Rama declined saying that he has given his word to his father to spent fourteen years in the forest and he will stick to the truth. There was a long conversation between Bharata and Sri Rama on various aspects of dharma. Sage Vasishta and a brahmin known as Jabali also joined the conversion. Sri Rama stood firm on his resolution. Finally he gave his padukas to Bharata. Bharata decided to rule the kingdom for fourteen years as a representative of Sri Rama putting the padukas on the throne.
