Pilgrimages and Temples of India (Bharatavarsha)
India (Bharatavarsha) is a land with a unique spiritual dimension. This spiritual dimension is expressed through its many pilgrimages and temples. However, one cannot fully understand the spiritual dimension of India by simply visiting the pilgrimages and temples. One needs to understand the divine source of these pilgrimages and how it is related to the sacred geography of the place. Pilgrimages and sacred geography are interconnected in India. And the Puranic story behind the pilgrimages form the backbone of the divine origin of the pilgrimage. The lives of true saints are nourishing the divinity of the pilgrimages till today. In modern times the spiritual dimension of the pilgrimages are often overlapped by other dimensions (commerce, social, political etc). So one need to be guided by the Puranic origin of the pilgrimages, the ancient sages who lived there and the sacred geography which existed there. This ideal Puranic view of the pilgrimage should be there in one's mind to truly appreciate them.
When one visits a pilgrimage, one will find many temples there. But not all will have a Puranic origin. One should ensure not to miss the Puranic temples (even though they may be small or in a dilapidated state).
The divine origin of a Puranic pilgrimage may be due to:
(1) Deed of an Incarnation of God
(2) Penance by Sages
(3) Deed of other Devotees (mentioned in the Puranas)
These places often have a special spiritual atmosphere. The Sacred Geography of the place sustains that spiritual atmosphere.
This site strives to bring out the Puranic pilgrimages of India (Bharatavarsha). The Puranic story is provided and the Sacred Geography is mentioned. Within the setting of modern times, it strives to point to the ancient Bharatavarsha.
