Gokarna is a Mukti Sthala of Karnataka (Bestower of Liberation) [Kollur, Udupi, Gokarna, Subramanya, Kumbashi, Koteshwara, Shankaranarayana]

Gokarna is a Paadal Petra Sthalam (Glorified by Nayanmars) [Thirugokarnam]

Shiva Linga of Ravana getting stuck here: Gokarna has the famous temple of Lord Mahabaleshwara. Lord Shiva gave a Shiva Linga to Ravana as a boon for his penance at Kailasha. While Ravana was bringing it to Lanka, the Shiva Linga got stuck in this place (due to a trick by devas).
