(Valmiki Ramayana) (About Jatayu)

• Rama: Sri Rama is believed to have performed the last rites of Jatayu in Thirupullam Bhutangudi Divya Desam. Since Sri Rama performed the last rites of a bird (Pul in Tamil) which has passed away (Bhutan in Tamil) and rested in this place (Kudi in Tamil is a resting place), hence the place is known as Thirupullam Bhutangudi (DD-10).

• Bhoomi: Bhoomi Devi appeared as the consort of Sri Rama when he was performing the last rites of Jatayu in Thirupullam Bhutangudi Divya Desam (since Devi Sita was not present).

• Vishnu: Krudra Rajan meditated in in Thirupullam Bhutangudi Divya Desam and got the darshan of Lord Vishnu in the Bhujanga Sayana posture.

- Thirupullam Bhutangudi is the 10th Divya Desam and is located in Chola Nadu.
- Perumal (Moolavar) is in Bhujanga Sayana posture facing East. The Utsavar image has Shankha and Chakra in hands.
- Pratyaksham: Chakravarti Thirumagan (Sri Rama), Krudra Rajan
- Mangalasasanam: Thirumangai Alvar (10 Pasurams)
- Vimanam: Shobana Vimanam
- Pushkarini: Jatayu Teertham or Krudra Teertham

Presence of Sri Rama in Thirupullam Bhutangudi:
• Sri Rama & Jatayu: Sri Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu in this place.
- Note 1: Since Sri Rama performed the last rites of a bird (Pul in Tamil) which has passed away (Bhutan in Tamil) and rested in this place (Kudi in Tamil is a resting place), hence the place is known as Thirupullam Bhutangudi. There is an Image of Jatayu engraved on the wall of the garbhagriha. The Pushkarini of the temple is known as Jatayu Teertham.
- Note 2: Another Divya Desam associated with the same legend of Jatayu is Thirupputkuzhi Divya Desam in Thondai Nadu near Kanchipuram.

• Sri Rama & Bhoomi Devi: Bhoomi Devi appeared as the consort of Sri Rama when he was performing the last rites of Jatayu (since Devi Sita was not present).
- Note: There is an Image of Bhoomi Devi in the garbhagriha itself as well as in a separate shrine.

• Sri Rama & Thirumangai Alvar: Sri Rama gave darshan to Thirumangai Alvar in the form of Lord Vishnu with four hands holding Shankha and Chakra.
- Events: When Thirumangai Alvar came to this place, he saw two princes (Sri Rama and Lakshmana) resting under the Punnai tree. He did not take notice of them and walked past them. But the Lord revealed himself to the Alvar. As Thirumangai Alvar was walking past the two princes under the Punnai tree, his eyesight started growing dim and he could not proceed forward. He returned to the same place. The Lord gave darshan to Thirumangai Alvar in the form of Lord Vishnu with four hands holding Shankha and Chakra.
- Note: The Utsavar Image of the Perumal resembles the form of the Lord in which he gave darshan to Thirumangai Alvar.

2. Presence of Lord Vishnu in Thirupullam Bhutangudi:
• Lord Vishnu & Krudra Rajan: Krudra Rajan meditated in this place and got the darshan of Lord Vishnu in the Bhujanga Sayana posture.
- Note: The Moolavar Image of the Perumal resembles the form of the Lord in which he gave darshan to Krudra Rajan. The Pushkarini of the temple is also known as Krudra Teertham.
