43. Thirukachi Athigiri (Satyavrata Kshetram) (திருக்கச்சி அத்திகிரி) (ஸத்யவ்ரத க்ஷேத்ரம்) Kshetre:

Thirukachi Athigiri - Varadaraja Perumal: Thirukachi Athigiri is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Bhootath Alvar, Thirumangai Alvar and others. Thirukachi is the ancient Athiyur which was a holy place filled with Athi trees. Athi (in Tamil) or Udumbara (in Sanskrit) is a tree sacred to Lord Vishnu. One of the name of the Lord in Vishnu Sahasranama is Udumbara. The place has also the sacred Hastigiri hill which is said to be the hill where elephant Gajendra worshipped Lord Vishnu. Hence the hill is also known as Gajendragiri. In this sacred place which is known as Satyavrata Kshetra, Lord Brahma performed an Ashvamedha Yagna and got the darshan of Lord Vishnu in his resplendant form. The name of the place Kanchi itself is said to be derived from this incident as Ka (Brahma) and Anchi (worshipped). Subsequently many devotees worshipped the Lord here and obtained blessings in their lives. The Lord here is known as Varadaraja. Vara means Boon, Da means giver and Raja means King. This is the form of the Lord as the giver of boons. This place is associated with many saints who got the blessings of the Lord, like Thirumangai Alvar, Thirukachi Nambiar, Ramanujar, Doddachariar, Nigamanta Desikar etc.


44. Thiru Ashtabhuyakaram (திரு அஷ்டபுயகரம்) Kshetre:
(Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu)

Thiru Ashtabhuyakaram - Ashtabhuja Perumal: Thiru Ashtabhuyakaram is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Peyalvar. The temple is near the Yathokthakari temple of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as Ashtabhuja Perumal. Ashta means Eight and Bhuja means Arms. The Lord here assumed a form with eight arms with weapons to vanquish a ferocious beast called Sarabha and protect the yagna of Lord Brahma. The Lord here is also known as Gajendra Varadar or giver (Da) of boon (Vara) to Gajendra. The elephant Gajendra is believed to have worshipped the Lord with the Lotus of the temple tank here, and the Gajendra Moksham event is said to have taken place in this temple.

Thiruthanka - Deepaprakasa Perumal: Thiruthanka is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruthanka is situated near the Yathokthakari temple of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as Deepaprakasa. Deepa is Lamp (signifying the Source of Light) and Prakasha is Light. The Lord here assumed the form of a huge Light to dispel the darkness during an yagna of Brahma. The symbolic meaning is that the Lord dispels our darkness of ignorance when we invoke him and enable us to do righteous actions.


46. Thiruvelukkai (திருவேளுக்கை) Kshetre:
(Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu)
• Om Sri Velukkaivalli / Amruthavalli (வேளுக்கைவல்லி / அம்ருதவல்லி) sameta Sri Azhagiya Singar / Mukundanayakan (அழகிய சிங்கர் / முகுந்த நாயகன்) Swamine Namah.
Thiruvelukkai - Azhagiya Singa Perumal: Thiruvelukkai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Periyalvar. Thiruvelukkai is situated near the Deepaprakasa Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. The name Thiruvelukkai is derived from Thiru (Divine), Vel (Wish) and Irrukai (Place of stay). So this means the divine place where the Lord stays out of his own wish. The Lord here is known as Azhagiya Singar which is the form of Sri Narasimha. In this form the Lord protected the yagna of Brahma from a Kapalika. The Lord is also known as Mukunda Nayakan which is said to be the earlier form of the Lord. In that form the Lord appeared before sage Bhrigu.


47. Thiruneeragam (திருநீரகரம்) Kshetre:
(Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu)
• Om Sri Nilamangaivalli (நிலமங்கைவல்லி) sameta Sri Jagadeeswarar (ஜகதீச்வரர்) Swamine Namah.
Thiruneeragam - Jagadeeswara Perumal: Thiruneeragam is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruneeragam is situated inside the Ulagalanda Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. According to legend, the Lord showed sage Markandeya the scene of the pralaya (deluge) here, himself taking the form of a small child lying on a banyan leaf in the midst of the water of deluge.
Note: There are four Divya Desams within the Ulagalanda Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. They are Thiru Ooragam, Thiruneeragam, Thirukaragam and Thirukarvanam.

Thirupadagam- Pandavadoota Perumal: Thirupadagam is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Bhootathalvar, Peyalvar, Namalvar and Thirumangai Alvar. Thirupadagam is situated near the Ekambareswarar temple of Kanchipuram. The name Thirupadagam is derived from Thiru Pada Agam in Tamil which means Divine (Thiru) Huge (Pada) Place of stay (Agam). This represents the Vishwaroopa form which the Lord assumed as the emissary of the Pandavas in the court of Duryodhana. The Huge Place of Stay signifies his huge form which could not be captured by the small power of Duryodhana. The Lord here is known as Pandavadoota. Pandava are the five Pandavas and Doota means Messenger. This is the form which the Lord assumed as the messenger of the Pandavas.

Thirunilathingal Thundam - Nilathingal Thundatha Perumal: Thirunilathingal Thundam is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thirunilathingal Thundam shrine is located within the Ekambareswarar temple of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as Nilathingal Thundathan. Nila means Moon. The meaning of the name is derived from the association of the Lord with the Moon. According to one legend the cool rays of the Moon comforted the Lord during samudra manthana (churning of the ocean) when the devastating halahala poison emerged from the ocean. According to another legend the cool rays of the Moon fell on the throat of the Lord when he assumed a Vishwaroopa form to protect the penance of Devi Parvati at Kanchipuram.

Thiru Ooragam - Trivikrama Perumal: Thiru Ooragam is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Thirumazhisai Alvar. Thiru Ooragam is situated near the Kamakshi temple of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as Trivikraman or Ulagalanda Perumal, the huge form the Lord assumed during his Vamana Avatara when he came to the yagna of king Mahabali and gave him boon. Since king Mahabali was not able to see his huge form, the Lord assumed the diminutive form of Adisesha. Hence the Divya Desam is known as Thiru Ooragam, Ooragam meaning snake. The two shrines, Peragam (huge form of Ulagalanda Perumal) and Ooragam (diminutive form of Adisesha) are considered together as part of the same Divya Desam.
Note: There are four Divya Desams within the Ulagalanda Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. They are Thiru Ooragam, Thiruneeragam, Thirukaragam and Thirukarvanam.

Thiruvehka - Yathokthakari Perumal: Thiruvehka is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar, Thirumazhisai Alvar, Poigai Alvar, Peyalvar and Nammalvar. This is one of the oldest temples in Kanchipuram. The name Thiruvehka is probably a corrupted form of Thiruvegavanai, because Lord Vishnu here laid on the path of river Vegavati to protect the yagna of Lord Brahma. Lord Vishnu here is known as Sri Bhujagasayana because he laid on the path of river Vegavati in his reclining form lying (Sayana) on a bed of Serpents (Bhujaga). Lord Vishnu here is also known as Yathokthakari which is derived from Yatha-Uktha-Kari which means doing (Kari) as requested (Yatha-Uktha) by his devotee. This signifies to the event that as requested by his devotee Bhakthisarar (Thirumazhisai Alvar), he followed him to leave Kanchipuram (and later coming back).

Thirukalvanur - Adivaraha Perumal: Thirukalvanur is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thirukalvanur is situated within the premises of the Kamakshi temple of Kanchipuram. The name Thirukalvanur is derived from Kalva meaning thief in Tamil, because Devi Lakshmi lovingly addressed the Lord as Kalva when he secretly came to meet her at the Kanchi Kamakshi temple. There is a legend behind this event.

The Lord here is known as Pavalavannan since he assumed a form which was coral red in color. According to legend, the Lord appeared before sage Bhrigu when the sage performed penance at Kanchipuram to atone his sin of kicking the chest of the Lord (when he was testing the Trinity).

The Lord here is known as Vaikunthanathan which literally means the Lord of Vaikuntha. According to legend, the Lord appeared before Pallavan and Villavan (the incarnation of his dwarapalakas) when they performed a yagna worshipping him.

Thiruputkuzhi - Vijayaraghava Perumal: Thiruputkuzhi is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruputkuzhi is located around 7 km from the main city of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as Vijayaraghava Perumal. According to legend, Sri Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu in this place. There is a hillock on which the temple is situated and a Jatayu pushkarini nearby. Yadavaprakasa, the guru of Sri Ramanuja resided in this place and taught the Advaita Vedanta to Ramanuja here.

Thiruninravur - Bhaktavatshala Perumal: Thiruninravur is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thirumangai Alvar did not directly sing the glory of the Lord while visiting this place. But later when he visited Mahabalipuram and Thirukannapuram, he sung that he was seeing the Lord of Thiruninravur in those places. Thiruninravur is derived from Thiru and Ninravur. Thiru means Wealth signifying goddess Lakshmi and Ninravur means where She stopped or stayed. According to legend, Devi Lakshmi after a misunderstanding with the Lord left Vaikuntha and stayed in this place for sometime. Later Samudraraja and Lord Vishnu also came here and stayed for sometime. Since the Lord stayed here, this place is also known as Srinivasa Kshetram. Thiruninravur is also holy to the Shaivites and they have a different interpretation of the name. According to them, the name Thiruninravur is derived from Thiri which means wick of lamp and Ninravur which means where it stopped. During a dispute with the Jainism two lamps were floated on the Coovam river to test the power of the respective religious sects. The lamp of the Shaivites became brighter and reached this place. According to them name of the place is derived from this incident.

Thiruvallur - Veeraraghava Perumal: Thiruvallur is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumazhisai Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar. It is located around 40 km from Chennai. Thiruvallur is the ancient Viksharanya Kshetram which was a Tapovanam for performing penance. The place was a beautiful forest full of fruit-bearing trees, flower trees, creepers and medicinal plants. There is a great Teertha (Tank) here known Hrittapapanashini Teertha which was built by the devas. It was a very beautiful tank full of lotus flowers growing over it. Hritta means heart, Papa means sin and Nashini means destroyer. Thus a bath in this tank destroys our sins and makes us pure. The place is so sacred that it is known as Punyavrata Kshetram. It is said that sages like Vasistha, Vamadeva and Vyasadeva performed sadhana in this place. However, the place gets the name Thiruvallur from the penance of sage Salihotra. There are many incidents related to people and celestial beings getting purified in this place. There is great significance of taking bath in the Hrittappanashini Teertha on the Thai Amavasai date. Viksharanya Kshetram is also associated with the incarnation of Devi Lakshmi as Vasumati, the daughter of king Dharmasena.

Thiruvallikkeni - Parthasarathy Perumal: Thiruvallikkeni is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Peyalvar, Thirumazhisai Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruvallikkeni is the ancient Vrindaranyam Kshetra or a holy forest filled with Tulasi (Vrinda) groves. The name Thiruvallikkeni is derived from Thiru Alli Keni in Tamil which means Divine (Thiru) Flower Creepers (Alli) growing on a Tank (Keni). Thus the place was a forest with Tulasi groves with a beautiful pond filled with Alli flower creepers. It is a holy place where several sages have performed penance and got the darshan of the Lord. The temple tank is known as Kairaveni pushkarini. The modern name of this place is Triplicane. The Lord here is known as Parthasarathy. Partha is Arjuna and Sarathy is Charioteer. This is the form of the Lord as the charioteer of Arjuna during the battle of Mahabharata.

Thiruneermalai - Ranganatha Perumal: Thiruneermalai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Bhootat Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruneermalai is situated in Chennai around 5 km from Pallavaram. The name Thiruneermalai is derived from Thiru (Divine), Neer (Water) and Malai (Hill). So it means a divine hill full of water. It is also known as Thoyadri which is derived from Thoya (Water) and Adri (Hill). It is said that once when Thirumangai Alvar came to visit Thiruneermalai it was filled with water and he had to wait for six months to visit the temple. The place where he waited is known as Thirumangai Alvapuram. Ancient Thiruneermalai was a place of great natural beauty full of groves, flowers and roaming animals as mentioned in the hymns of the Alvars. Thiruneermalai is a Svayam Vyakta Kshetra where Lord Ranganatha is self-manifested. The Lord here is seen in all the four postures - Standing (Ninran) as Neervannan, Sitting (Irundan) as Narasimha, Lying down (Kidanthan) as Ranganathan and Walking (Nadanthan) as Trivikrama. The shrines of Sri Ranganthan, Sri Narasimha and Sri Trivikrama are at the top of the hill (which has around 250 steps) while the shrine of Sri Neervannan is at the foot of the hill. It is said that Sri Ranganathan gave darshan to sage Valmiki at the foot of the hill in the form of Sri Rama. On the request of the sage, the Lord permanently abided there as Sri Neervannan. The tank of Thiruneermalai known as Kshira Pushkarini is also very famous.

Thiruvidanthai - Lakshmi Varaha Perumal: Thiruvidanthai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar. Thiruvidanthai is located around 40 km from Chennai on the way to Mahabalipuram. This ancient Varaha Kshetram was a beautiful place with lovely groves, freely roaming animals and where the sages performed yagnas. The place filled the mind with mental peace. The name Thiruvidanthai is derived from Thiru (Divine) and Ida Yenthai (Left Side) because the Lord is having the divine consort on the left side. (In contrast in Mahabalipuram there is a Varaha Murthy known as Thiru Vala Yenthai where the Lord is having the divine consort on the right side). According to legend, the Lord gave darshan to king Bali in the form of Varaha when he performed penance near the Varaha Teertham in this place. Also the Lord took the form of a brahmachari and married the 360 daughters of sage Kalva here, almost one on each day of the year. Hence the Lord is also known as Nitya Kalyana Perumal (Nitya means daily and Kalyana means Marriage). After marriage the Lord merged all the daughters (who were parts of the Divine Mother) in the single form of the Divine Mother and appeared in the form of Varaha with the Divine Mother on the left side.

Thirukadalmallai - Sthalasayana Perumal: Thirukadalmallai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Bhootath Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar. Thirukadalmallai is the modern Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram. In this place the Lord appeared before a king of Mahabalipuram in the form of Sri Bhoovaraha Perumal. The king used to go to Thiruvidanthai daily, worship Lord Varaha there, and subsequently feed around 4000 brahmins. In this place, the Lord also appeared in the form of Sri Sthalasayana Perumal (in reclining posture on the ground) to sage Pundareeka who wished to worship the Lord of the milky ocean with fresh lotus flowers.

Thirukadigai - Yoga Narasimha Perumal: Thirukadigai is a Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Peyalvar and Thirumangai Alvar. Thirukadigai is situated around 27 km from the Arakonam junction. The Divya Desam is also known as Ghatikachalam which is derived from Ghatika (a period of time) and Achalam (non-moving signifying mountain). Lord Narasimha gave darshan to Prahlada and the Saptarshis here for a time period of one Ghatika. The place is also known as Sholingur or Sholingar or Sholingapuram. This is said to be a corrupt form of Chola Lingapuram where the Cholas once worshipped a Shiva temple with a natural Shiva Lingam (which till exists now). This is also said to be corrupt form of Chola Singapuram which signifies the worship of Narasimha by the Cholas. There are two hills in the town known as Periya Malai (or Big Hill) and Chinna Malai (or Small Hill). The temple of Lord Narasimha is on the Periya Malai and a temple of Sri Anjaneyar is on the Chinna Malai. This place is associated with two famous devotees, Erumbi Appar and Doddachariar.
