The Tripurasundari (Matabari) Temple is situated on a small hillock which resembles the hump of a Tortoise (Kurma-Prishta).
According to traditional history mentioned in Tripura Vamshavali, king Dhanya Manikya of Tripura established Devi in this temple (during the 15th century). The king was building a temple for Lord Vishnu, when Devi came to her dream and instructed him to establish Her in that temple. The Devi told him that She was currently established under a tree in Chattagram and was worshipped by the community of Mag. The king should bring Her here and establish Her. Else, it would bring ruin to him. The king was in a dilemma since the temple was meant for Lord Vishnu but Devi assured the king.
There are two Images of Devi in this temple. The bigger one (around 5 feet) is the main Image. The smaller one (around 2 feet) is known as Choto Maa and is considered as the original Image.
The Tripuresha Bhairava associated with this temple is situated in another part of the town. The temple is known as Shiv Bari or Mahadev Bari. King Dhanya Manikya is also said to have established the Bhairava here.
On the eastern side of the temple is the temple tank known as Kalyan Sagar. Since the tank was excavated during the time of king Kalyan Manikya, it is known as Kalyan Sagar.
