Maruts

Maruts are the deities of storm

- अध स्वनान्मरुतां विश्वमा सद्म पार्थिवम् । अरेजन्त प्र मानुषाः ॥
[Adha Svanaan-Marutaam Vishvamaa Sadma Paarthivam | Arejanta Pra Maanussaah ||] (RV 1.38.10)
O Maruts, the roar (Svanaat) of yours (i.e. of Maruts) (Marutaam) envelop the world (Vishvam) and enter the dwelling places (Sadma) of the earth (Paarthivam); They make the human beings (Maanussaah) tremble (Arejanta) (there).

Maruts are the companions of Indra in destroying obstructing forces

- वीळु चिदारुजत्नुभिर्गुहा चिदिन्द्र वह्निभिः । अविन्द उस्रिया अनु ॥
[Viiddu Cid-Aarujatnubhir-Guhaa Cid-Indra Vahnibhih | Avinda Usriyaa Anu] (RV 1.6.5)
By breaking open (Aarujatnubhih) the strong (Viddu) cave (Guhaa) with the help of the conveyors (Vahnibhih) (referring to Maruts who traverse to difficult places), Indra released (Avindah) the cows (Usriyah).

Maruts destroy the obstructing forces

- प्र वः शर्धाय घृष्वये त्वेषद्दुम्नाय शुष्मिणे । देवत्तं ब्रह्म गायत ॥
[Pra Vah Shardhaaya Ghrssvaye Tvessad-Dumnaaya Shussminne | Devattam Brahma Gaayata] (RV 1.37.4)
O Maruts (Shardha), to you all (Vah) who are the destroyers (Ghrssvaye) (of enemies), and shine (Tvessad-Dumnaaye) with roaring powers (Shussminne) (of wind); (To you) we sing (Gaayata) the god-given (Devattam) prayers (Brahma).

Maruts release the rain water from the clouds

- वाश्रेव विद्युन्मिमाति वत्सं न माता सिषक्ति । यदेषां वृष्टिरसर्जि ॥
[Vaashre(aa-I)va Vidyun-Mimaati Vatsam Na Maataa Sissakti | Yad-Essaam Vrssttir-Asarji] (RV 1.38.8)
When lightning (Vidyut) thunders (Mimaati) like (Iva) a bellowing cow (Vaashraa) when the calf (Vatsam) is not (Na) near (Sisakti) the mother (Maataa); then with the power of these (Essaam) (i.e. Maruts), rain-water (Vrssttih) is released (Asarji) (from the sky).

- दिवा चित्तमः कृण्वन्ति पर्जन्येनोदवाहेन । यत्पृथिवीं व्युन्दन्ति ॥
[Divaa Cit-Tamah Krnnvanti Parjanyeno(a-U)da-Vaahena | Yat-Prthiviim Vyundanti] (RV 1.38.9)
O Maruts, when the sky (Divaa) is made (Krnnvanti) dark (Tamah) by the water (Uda) - bearing (Vaahena) - clouds (Parjanya); then you inundate (Vyundanti) the earth (Prthiviim).
