• Ujjain(Avanti)(Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh):Avanti is a puranic kshetra on the bank of river Kshipra (Shipra) where Lord Shiva abides as the Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlinga. Shiva Purana describes the story behind this Jyotirlinga. Lord Shiva protected devotee brahmin Veda Priya and brahmanas from the atrocities of demon Dushana in Avanti, and upon their request abided as a Jyotirlinga. Skanda Purana - Avanti Khanda describes this place as the ancient Mahakala Vana where Lord Shiva as Rudra abided. Rudra was the form of Lord Shiva born as the son of Lord Brahma, when Brahma performed penance and asked for a son as boon. Apart from being a Jyotirlinga, Avanti Kshetra has two Shakti Peethas, identified with Devi Harsiddhi and Devi Gadh-Kalika. These Shakti Peethas are mentioned in the Peetha Nirnaya Tantra. Avanti was also a great center of learning where sage Sandipani has his ashrama and gurukula. Sri Krishna and Sri Balarama studied in this gurukula and mastered 64 arts in 64 days. This is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam.
